An Update from Chairman Matthew Harvey
WEST VIRGINIA (January 28, 2025) – West Virginia First Foundation (WVFF), a private non-profit organization, continues to make unprecedented progress in addressing the state’s substance use crisis. In just a few short months, the Foundation has successfully established a dedicated team, developed robust programs, and disbursed critical funding to communities in need. These efforts underscore WVFF’s unwavering commitment to empowering West Virginians to prevent substance use disorder, support recovery, and save lives.
Last fall, WVFF announced the launch of the Initial Opportunity Grant (IOG) program and began accepting applications. As the new year kicks off, the Foundation has already started the disbursement of the nearly $10.4 million awarded to initial recipients across the state. This turnaround underscores WVFF’s commitment to ensuring resources are delivered to communities swiftly, a remarkable achievement for a foundation of its kind. In addition, WVFF launched a supplemental round of funding to assist applicants who encountered deficiencies in their initial submissions. The Foundation’s staff is providing personalized support to each applicant, ensuring every organization has the opportunity to secure funding. Supplemental applications are due by January 31, 2025, with final notifications to be issued by March 31, 2025.
Chairman of the Board, Matthew Harvey, praised the Foundation’s progress, stating, “What WVFF has accomplished in just a few short months is nothing short of extraordinary. Jonathan Board worked diligently to hire a top-tier team and has shown unwavering dedication to being present within local communities. He has spent immeasurable time on the road, meeting face-to-face with West Virginians to listen and learn from them firsthand. His leadership has been instrumental in turning vision into reality and ensuring that resources are making an immediate impact where they are needed most. I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my fellow Board of Directors who have generously offered their time, expertise, and insight. Their dedication has been crucial in shaping the Foundation’s early success and setting the stage for meaningful, long-term outcomes for our communities.”
Harvey continued, “We face huge statistics in West Virginia that we must overcome—numbers that represent lives impacted by substance use disorder. The only way we can overcome these challenges is by working together. WVFF is not solely focused on treatment but on implementing outcomes-based practices that create lasting change, such as addressing neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and other critical issues affecting West Virginians. If you have a solution, we want to hear from you. Work with your local representation. Raise concerns, raise questions. We are here to listen and collaborate. Together, we can make West Virginia healthier and stronger.”
Executive Director Jonathan Board expressed his gratitude, saying, “I want to extend my deepest thanks to Chairman Harvey for his unwavering support and leadership. His guidance and dedication have been vital in helping the Foundation achieve these remarkable milestones in such a short time. I also want to thank the Board of Directors for their invaluable contributions, time, and expertise. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in guiding our work and ensuring that we stay focused on creating meaningful, lasting change.”
