Job Summary:

This position plays a pivotal role in the strategic direction and operational efficiency of the foundation. The West Virginia First Foundation is seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive team. The CFO will play a critical role in developing and implementing financial strategies that support our mission and ensure the Foundation’s long-term sustainability. The ideal candidate will possess strong financial acumen, strategic thinking, and a passion for driving impactful change.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic financial leadership and direction to support the Foundation’s mission and goals. 
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and controls to ensure the integrity of financial operations. 
  • Oversee the preparation and management of budgets, financial forecasts, and financial reports. 
  • Manage the Foundation’s investment portfolio, ensuring alignment with our strategic objectives and risk tolerance. 
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and reporting requirements, including audits and tax filings. 
  • Collaborate with the executive team and Board of Directors to develop and execute the Foundation’s strategic plan. 
  • Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth. 
  • Evaluate and manage financial risks, providing recommendations to mitigate potential impacts. 
  • Serve as a key liaison with external stakeholders, including donors, partners, and financial institutions. 
  • Support fundraising initiatives and donor relations by providing financial insights and reporting.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; MBA or CPA preferred. 
  • Preferably 10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, including state/local governance and or the nonprofit sector(s). 
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial management, including fund accounting, grant management, and compliance. 
  • Proven experience in investment management and financial strategy development. 
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
